STUDENT GUIDANCE · SKILLS AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Preparing for Practical and Clinical Learning
Practical learning helps students connect classroom knowledge with tasks and decisions they may encounter in their field. Preparation, respectful conduct and a willingness to learn matter in a skills room, community setting or clinical placement.
Before the session
- Read the learning objectives and instructions issued by your lecturer or placement supervisor.
- Bring the materials, logbook or approved equipment requested for the session.
- Confirm reporting time, venue, uniform or dress requirements and attendance procedure using current college instructions.
- Review relevant theory, safety precautions and the steps of the skill you will practise.
- Ask in advance if you are unsure what to bring or how the session will be assessed.
During skills practice or placement
Follow directions from the authorised lecturer, instructor or placement supervisor. Do not perform a procedure on a patient or service user unless you have the required supervision, permission and competence. Protect privacy, follow the approved consent process, observe infection-prevention guidance and keep information about patients and families confidential.
Be honest about what you can and cannot do. If a situation is unfamiliar, pause and ask for guidance rather than guessing. Professional learning includes respectful communication, punctuality, preparation and working within the limits of your competence.
Use feedback to improve
Feedback is part of learning, not simply a score. Listen to the points raised, ask for clarification and identify actions to practise before the next session. Complete logbooks and assessment forms accurately through the process communicated by the college or placement site. Never fabricate attendance, signatures, procedures or clinical records.
After the session
- Record the skills or concepts covered while details are fresh.
- Review the steps you found difficult using approved learning resources.
- Complete assigned reflections, logbook entries or follow-up tasks honestly.
- Raise safety concerns through the appropriate supervisor or college channel.
- Keep placement information confidential; never post identifiable patient details or images on social media.
